WHO WE ARE

Built by Someone Who Actually Lived It.

Not studied from outside. Built from inside a mechanical company, one growing pain at a time.

Our founder started at a mechanical company when it had about a dozen guys in the field and a handful of office staff. Over the years, she built the marketing, human resources, and compliance systems that helped take it to $25 million in revenue, over 100 technicians, and operations across 13 states.

When the company was acquired by a private equity firm, she built and ran an in-house marketing department supporting several of their portfolio companies. Even before that, in jobs outside the trades, she was the one bringing in outside consultants when a team didn't have the staff to handle something internally - and it usually worked fine. But once she was in the mechanical world, she saw the opposite: consultants who didn't speak the language, who'd pitch an HR policy that worked somewhere else entirely and tell her to just make the technicians follow it, with no understanding of why that never actually works with this workforce.

By then, years in this industry hadn't just taught her the difference between what works and what doesn't - it had given her a real passion for it, and for helping small companies fight for the growth they're capable of. When her department was eventually shut down in a corporate restructuring, the leaders she'd worked with reached out on their own, asking her to create her own consulting firm so she could keep doing this work for them. That passion, and that invitation, is how Dark Horse Works started - founded by Hinda T. Miller.

WHY THIS EXISTS

We Didn't Learn This From a Textbook.

WHAT GUIDES US

Growth Isn't a Resource Problem. It's a Foundation Problem.

Most owners think growth is about adding more - more trucks, more techs, more accounts. We believe growing pains aren't a resource problem. They're a foundation problem: whether what's already in place, inside the business and in the market, can support where you're trying to go.

That belief shows up differently depending on where the gap actually is. Most owners believe if it's in place, they're covered - a manual, a policy, a hiring process. We believe having something isn't the same as having something that works. And most owners either think reputation still works the way it always has, or that a website and some social posts means they've kept up. We believe neither is true: buyers now find and vet vendors through Google, AI, and social proof before they ever call - and having something isn't the same as being built to be found.

HOW WE SHOW UP

How We Show Up for the Businesses We Work With.

Every business we work with is different, but the way we approach the work stays the same. These are the principles that guide how we listen, what we recommend, and how we show up for the businesses that trust us with The Checkmate, The Gambit, or The Tempo.

They aren't abstract ideas we came up with to sound good on a website. They're the things that have mattered most across years of doing this work inside businesses like yours, and they shape every conversation, every recommendation, and every project we take on.

Here's what that looks like in the way we work:

  • Know the Business.

We take the time to understand the business, the industry, and the reality behind the problem before deciding what should be done.

  • Be Honest About What Is Needed.

We won't recommend work simply because we can sell it. If you don't need something, we'll tell you. If there's a better or simpler approach, we'll tell you that too.

  • Stay Current.

Expertise isn't something you earn once and stop maintaining. We keep learning - watching how buyers now find and research vendors through AI, Google, and search, how employment and safety regulations change, and what's actually working in the field - and bringing current knowledge to every part of the work.

  • Explain the Why.

You should understand what we're recommending, why it matters, and how it fits into the bigger picture. We don't believe in making clients depend on us simply because they don't understand the work.

  • Make It Useful.

Good consulting should result in something you can actually use. We care about what happens after the recommendation, not just how good the presentation looks..

  • Do the Right Thing.

Sometimes the right answer is not the easiest one, the most profitable one for us, or even something we can do for you. Our responsibility is to give you the answer we believe is right for your business.

WHO WE'VE HELPED

What Our Clients Say.

The best way to understand what it is like to work with Dark Horse Works is to hear it from the people who have.

Our clients come from different trades and come to us with different needs, but their experiences share a common thread: they value having someone who understands their business, does what they say they will do, and genuinely cares about the outcome.

That's the standard we hold ourselves to.
