WHO WE SERVE
Field Service Businesses With 10 to 150 Field Employees.
HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire, pest control, landscaping, and beyond - if your people are in the field and your business is growing, this is who we built Dark Horse Works for.
Field service businesses run differently than most.
Revenue comes from skilled people being dispatched to a job, not a product sitting on a shelf, which means the business is only as strong as its ability to schedule, staff, and show up reliably every single day. Growth has historically come from reputation and referral, earned job by job over years, not from a marketing department - which is exactly why that channel is now under real pressure as buyers shift to researching vendors through Google, AI, and social proof instead. Fleet, fuel, and equipment costs eat into margin in ways a typical service business never has to think about. Safety, licensing, and compliance carry real weight because the work itself carries real risk, and employment regulations shift depending on where you operate and how many people you employ. And the whole operation depends on finding, training, and keeping good technicians in an industry where that's gotten harder every year, not easier.
That's your world and one we understand - not something we adapted from working with businesses that look nothing like yours.
YOUR BUSINESS
We Understand How Field Service Actually Works.
WHAT YOU'RE UP AGAINST
Growth Puts Pressure on Every Part of That Model at Once.
Maybe you built the business yourself - a truck, a phone number, and a reputation earned one job at a time, grown into a real company with real people depending on it now. Maybe someone else did that work, and you're the one who came in after - a new owner, a GM brought in to run and grow what's already here. Either story is common in the field service industry, and neither one changes what happens next as the business works to keep growing.
But the reality of that growth is that it puts pressure on every part of it at once. More jobs means more people to schedule, train, and manage, and the informal way that worked at a smaller size doesn't scale cleanly to a bigger one. More trucks means more maintenance, more liability, more to track. More revenue riding on reputation alone gets harder to defend as the buyers who knew your name retire, replaced by people who research vendors online instead of asking around. Marketing, people, and compliance usually end up split between whoever's available - an office manager, a spouse, a field manager - none of them trained in the function they've been handed, because the business never needed that expertise at the size it started at.
This is the reality we understand - not because we read about it, but because it's the world we've actually worked in.
WHO WE'RE BUILT FOR
Field Service Businesses - In Every Form.
If your business sends skilled people into the field to do the work - and you're running a small to mid-size company with 10 to 150 field employees - this is who Dark Horse Works was built for, regardless of what trade or industry that work happens to be in. See where your business fits:
HVAC, Refrigeration & Mechanical
Complex maintenance contracts, technical crews spread across job sites, and facility managers who vet a new vendor carefully before they ever pick up the phone.
Plumbing, Fire Protection & BAS
Code compliance and licensing requirements that don't forgive a documentation gap, plus RFPs and property manager relationships that reward a business that looks buttoned-up, not homemade.
Pest Control, Landscaping & Janitorial
Large, often high-turnover field teams, and commercial contracts that increasingly go to whichever vendor a property manager can actually find and trust online.
Electrical, Security & Food/Beverage Equipment
Technical work your customers trust with real safety and liability stakes, and RFP-driven relationships where a documented, credible presence matters as much as the work itself.
Any Other Field Service Business
Copier repair, AV installation, equipment servicing - if your people are skilled, in the field, and doing the work, the same visibility and structure gaps show up here too.
If your business isn't listed here, that doesn't mean we're not a fit. Tell us what you do, and we'll tell you honestly whether our experience applies.
WHERE OUR EXPERTISE COMES FROM
We Know Field Service Businesses From the Inside.
Our experience doesn't come from researching an industry before taking on a client. It comes from actually working inside a field service business - the people, the customers, the systems, and the pressures that come with it.
We understand what it takes to market a technical service to a facility or property manager who's already vetting vendors before they ever pick up the phone. We understand recruiting for skilled field positions that are genuinely hard to fill, managing the demands behind a field workforce, and building policies and procedures that actually hold up when they're tested.
We also understand what it means to run a small to mid-size company specifically. Skilled people are harder to find. Customers have more options and higher expectations. Vehicles, equipment, contracts, regulations, and insurance can all move your bottom line - and unlike a larger company, you likely don't have a dedicated person handling every one of those areas.
That's why you won't spend the first month explaining how your industry works. We already know.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What size company do you actually work with?
We work primarily with field service businesses with 10 to 150 field employees. Below that range, the systems we build usually aren't necessary yet. Above it, the needs typically require more custom, ongoing support than these systems are built for.
Do you only work with mechanical and trade businesses?
No. We have the deepest experience in mechanical, trade, and field service industries, but the real requirement is simpler: if your people are skilled, in the field, and doing the work, we understand your world.
Why does industry experience matter this much?
Because generic consulting advice doesn't translate. A policy that works for a tech company or a marketing approach built for a retail brand doesn't automatically apply to a business with technicians in the field, facility managers as buyers, and compliance requirements most industries never deal with. We're not starting from a generic playbook and adapting it to fit - we already know what your world looks like.
I've tried hiring help before and it didn't work out. Why would this be different?
Most outside help falls into one of two categories: generic and doesn't understand your industry, or industry-adjacent but not specialized in marketing, human resources, or compliance. We built Dark Horse Works specifically to close that gap - real expertise in the discipline, paired with real experience inside businesses like yours.
What if my business doesn't fit neatly into one of your listed industries?
Reach out anyway. The list reflects where we have the deepest experience, not a hard limit on who we can help.
If This Sounds Like Your Business, Let's Talk.
You don't have to fit every detail perfectly. If your people are in the field and you're feeling the growing pains, that's enough reason to reach out.
Dark Horse Works... because industry knowledge changes everything.
